How to Resize an Image for Instagram (Free, Correct Sizes)

Upload a photo that's the wrong shape and Instagram crops it — often chopping off the important part. Resizing to the right dimensions first keeps your whole image visible and sharp. Here's the free way to do it.

The Instagram sizes that matter

• Square post: 1080 × 1080 px (1:1) — the classic feed post.
• Portrait post: 1080 × 1350 px (4:5) — takes up the most feed space.
• Story / Reel: 1080 × 1920 px (9:16) — full-screen vertical.
• Landscape post: 1080 × 566 px (1.91:1).

Portrait (4:5) is worth knowing — it's the largest a feed photo can be, so it stands out most as people scroll.

Resize in three steps

• Open the Instagram resizer.
• Upload your photo and pick the format — post, portrait or story.

Avoid the quality drop
